The New Tradition Polish Radio Folk Festival was established in 1998. Since the beginning its purpose was to popularise folk music in Poland and to promote new groups which find inspiration in the traditional music from Poland, including Poland’s ethnic minorities. Among the laureates of the competition there are, amongst others, Muzykanci, Kwadrofonik, Adam Strug, Warsaw Village Band, Agata Siemaszko, Vołosi, Kapela Maliszów, Karolina Cicha and Banda Nella Nebia.
Since many years the festival is inaugurated with a “Source Music” concert, every time devoted to a different ethnographic region of Poland. This year the theme is Lasowiacy – i.e. the inhabitants of the Sandomierz Woodlands situated between the Vistula and San rivers. The concert will feature: Jan Cebula’s Band from Kolbuszowa, the Singer Zofia Wydro and the singers’ ensemble from Baranów Sandomierski, The Niwa Band from Niwiska and the Kocirba group.
Special guests of the 19th edition of the Festival are : the slide guitar virtuoso Debashish Bhattacharya from India and Duo Limani Izeri and Quawal – Albanian artists from northern Macedonia.
Since 2001 the festival also organises a competition for the best folk album of the year – Folk Phonogram of the Year Award. The winner will be announced on April 26th at a press conference. Since 2009 there is also a “Sources Phonogram” competition, which promotes traditional music in Poland. Not only new recordings take part in this competition, but also archive recordings of folk instrumentalists and singers.
The Polish Radio 2 “Source Music” Award will be presented on the second day of the festival. It is an award for outstanding folk artists, who cultivate tradition and carry it to the next generations and are often present on Polish Radio 2.
The folk music competition is one of the most important parts of the New Tradition Festival. The competition auditions take place at the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio on Friday and Saturday, beginning at 16.00 (admission free). All the concerts are broadcast by Polish Radio 2.
