The 13-kilometre road section will cost PLN 1.9 billion (EUR 440 million, USD 480 million) to build and be completed by 2025, Poland’s national road authority GDDKiA said on Wednesday as officials signed an agreement for an initial design for the project.

Poland’s Deputy Infrastructure Minister Andrzej Bittel told reporters that the new road would help improve transportation in Warsaw and make it easier for drivers to get out of the city while heading north all the way to popular seaside resorts more than 300 kilometres away.

The new stretch of road from Warsaw city limits to what is known as the Kiełpin junction will feature two tunnels and accommodate three lanes of traffic in each direction, according to the national road authority.

Once completed, the Warsaw-Kiełpin road will be part of Poland’s longest expressway, the 700-kilometre S7, which will run right through the middle of the country and connect the southern resort town of Rabka-Zdrój with the northern coastal city of Gdańsk.
