During a debate in the lower house on the PLN 212 billion (EUR 47 billion, USD 52 billion) package, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said: "The data flowing in from individual countries and rating agencies … is alarming."

Morawiecki told deputies: "Everyone around the world must unite to fight the coronavirus, but not do so on the basis of the false choice of whether we're fighting for public health or for the economy.”

"We think that spread of coronavirus needs to be slowed to the maximum, but at the same time we are aware” that “great damage” is being inflicted on the economy, he added.

Friday’s debate was taking place with a limited number of deputies in the main chamber of parliament.

Other MPs were taking part remotely after lawmakers on Thursday approved changes to in-house regulations allowing them to use distance technology to limit face-to-face interaction.

A total of 1,289 people have tested positive for the Covid-19 disease in Poland, with 16 deaths from the coronavirus so far, officials said on Friday afternoon.
