After a long debate on a multi-billion relief plan that lasted from Friday evening until the early hours of Saturday morning, Polish MPs also adopted regulations that would allow Poles over 60, as well as those in quarantine, to cast their votes by mail.

The opposition called the regulations "outrageous," and Borys Budka, the leader of the largest opposition party, the Civic Coalition, said the ruling Law and Justice party's refusal to postpone the elections was putting the lives of Polish citizens at risk.

"The elections may take place when it is safe, when everyone is sure that they can cast their votes without fear," Budka was quoted by Poland's PAP news agency as saying.

He added: "Our main goal today is to stop the spread of the epidemic."
