"Over the next two weeks, over 10,000 soldiers will undergo medical training so as to be ready to help medics in caring for patients infected with the coronavirus,” Błaszczak wrote on Twitter.

He added: “Soldiers with medical education and paramedics will also undergo specialized training.”

Amid efforts to stem the spread of the coronavirus, the Polish army is working with the health ministry, and helping the elderly and people in quarantine, state news agency PAP reported.

The Polish army has 14 military hospitals and five medical centres on standby, PAP added.

A total of 2,633 people have tested positive for the COVID-19 disease in Poland, with 45 deaths from the coronavirus so far, officials said on Thursday morning.
