Southern regions were hit particularly hard. In the village of Łapanów, south-east of Kraków, several dozen buildings and churches were flooded over the weekend.

Some families there were forced to flee upstairs after water rose the ceiling of the ground floor in their homes, private broadcaster TVN reported.

Rainfall also caused severe flooding in a hospital in the southern village of Szczyrzyc. Patients were moved to upper floors.

Thousands of households across Poland were left without electricity supplies.
