Under a bill passed by the upper house of Poland's parliament on Thursday, Poles exiled or deported to the former Soviet Union from 1936 to 1956 will receive a one-off cash boost of no less than PLN 200 (EUR 46, USD 54) for each month of repression.

The average benefit is expected to be around PLN 13,200, with the minimum payout set at no less than PLN 2,400 per person, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Around 22,000 citizens are expected to benefit from the new measure, with the total cost to public coffers estimated at around PLN 290 million.
