"The British mutation displaces other variants of the coronavirus in Poland," Niedzielski tweeted on Sunday.

At a press conference on Saturday, Niedzielski said that the British variant this year constituted “30 percent of the cases, then 20 percent, even two weeks ago it decreased a bit, but in the last week we are dealing with a very large acceleration”.

Poland on Thursday reported 27,278 new coronavirus infections, the highest tally since November.

On Saturday, the government reimposed a partial lockdown across the country amid a surge in the epidemic.
