Poland confirms 28,487 new coronavirus cases, 768 more deaths

Poland on Friday reported 28,487 new coronavirus infections and 768 more deaths, its second-deadliest day on record, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 2,528,006 and fatalities to 57,427.

Of the new cases confirmed on Friday, 4,686 were in the densely populated southern coal-mining region of Silesia.

Meanwhile, 3,676 new infections were reported in the central region of Mazowieckie, which includes the national capital Warsaw.

The western province of Wielkopolskie, which is home to the major city of Poznańhad the third-highest number of new infections confirmed by officials on Friday, at 3,285.

The latest deaths in Poland’s coronavirus outbreak are 556 people with pre-existing medical conditions and 212 who died directly because of COVID-19, the Polish health ministry said.

On Thursday, Poland confirmed a record 954 deaths and 27,887 new coronavirus infections nationwide, compared with 638 deaths and 14,910 fresh cases a day earlier.

On April 1, the Polish health ministry confirmed 35,251 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country more than a year ago.

Poland’s second-highest number of daily cases was when 35,143 new coronavirus infections were confirmed nationwide on March 26.

On November 25, the country reported its third-highest daily toll of 674 deaths related to the coronavirus.

Poland's first case of coronavirus infection was reported on March 4, 2020.

34,550 in hospitals, 439,436 quarantined

The health ministry announced on Friday morning that 34,550 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals nationwide, 3,376 of them on ventilators, with a further 439,436 people quarantined for possible coronavirus exposure.

Meanwhile, 2,107,776 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, including 31,272 over the last 24 hours, the health ministry also said.
