The Polish government will announce a roadmap for a further easing of coronavirus restrictions by June 5, health minister Adam Niedzielski has said.

The government official said he was optimistic about social life returning to normal in the upcoming weeks.

"We have been in the ascending phase of the third wave," Niedzielski told private radio broadcaster RMF FM, noting that the current rate of vaccinations has contributed to getting closer to herd immunity in Poland.

If the downward coronavirus trend continues, the government may allow for nightclubs to reopen and ease remaining restrictions on large events, Poland’s health minister said.

Niedzielski noted, however, that with new COVID-19 mutations emerging across the globe, "there is no such thing as a final victory over the coronavirus pandemic.”

The health ministry reported on Saturday that 5.4 million Poles are considered fully vaccinated.

As of Saturday, over 17.6 million doses of coronavirus vaccines have been administered in Poland.

The government last month announced a loosening of COVID restrictions in several stages amid falling numbers of coronavirus cases.

On Friday, cinemas, theatres, operas and philharmonics in Poland were allowed to reopen at half capacity.
