Poland confirms 176 new coronavirus cases, 6 more deaths

Poland on Thursday reported 176 new coronavirus infections and six more deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 2,883,624 and fatalities to 75,275.

Of the new cases confirmed on Thursdaythe most—36—were in the southern province of Małopolskie, which includes the historic city of Kraków.

The latest deaths in Poland’s coronavirus outbreak are four people with pre-existing medical conditions and two others who died directly because of COVID-19, the health ministry said.

On Wednesday, Poland confirmed four new deaths and 164 new coronavirus infections nationwide. 

On April 8the country reported its highest daily toll of 954 deaths related to the coronavirus.

On April 1, the Polish health ministry confirmed 35,251 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country early last year.

Poland's first case of coronavirus infection was reported on March 4, 2020.

298 in hospitals, 74,265 quarantined

The Polish health ministry announced on Thursday morning that 298 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals nationwide, 42 of them on ventilators, with a further 74,265 people quarantined for possible coronavirus exposure.

Meanwhile, 2,654,097 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, the health ministry also said.

Officials have warned that the number of COVID-19 infections in the country could rise in the coming weeks as the Delta variant of the coronavirus begins to spread more quickly.

Poland's Health Minister Adam Niedzielski said on Wednesday that if the daily number of coronavirus cases nationwide exceeded 1,000, new restrictions would be put in place.
