Fierce winds, rain hit Poland

Firefighters were called out more than 3,500 times over the past 24 hours after strong winds battered large parts of Poland, snapping trees, damaging roofs and disrupting power supplies, authorities said on Tuesday morning.

Powerful winds and downpours wreaked havoc in the northern region of Pomorskie, the central Mazowieckie province and Lubelskie in the eastthe Government Centre for Security (RCB) reported.

Firefighters were also called to deal with the aftermath of gales in the southern regions of Śląskie and Małopolskie, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

More than 63,000 customers were without electricity on Tuesday morning after power lines were damaged in various areas of the country, according to Piotr Błaszczyk, head of the information policy department at the Government Centre for Security.

Over the last two days, the centre has sent out 7 million text messages alerting people in various provinces over intense rainfall and ferocious winds causing a risk of local flooding and power outages, Błaszczyk told reporters.

There were no reports of injuries due to the extreme weather.
