The committee is the second-largest in the European Parliament, with 71 Eurodeputies sitting on it.
Waszczykowski was elected after receiving 37 votes; 24 Eurodeputies voted against him and seven abstained.
Meanwhile, former Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło on Wednesday failed to be elected as the head of the European Parliament’s employment and social affairs committee.
Waszczykowski and Szydło come from Poland’s governing conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, which its leader said won European Parliament elections in May with the best showing for any party in any vote in Poland since the collapse of communism in 1989.
Waszczykowski was replaced as Poland’s foreign minister by Jacek Czaputowicz at the start of last year following a sweeping Cabinet reshuffle.
