Poland is the first Central and Eastern European country to be part of the UN Global Compact Government Group, Poland’s PAP news agency reported.

The agreement was signed in New York by Poland's Investment and Development Minister Jerzy Kwieciński and the Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, Lise Kingo.

The international platform encourages entrepreneurs to implement sustainable development goals through business involvement and implementation of UNGC principles that address responsibilities in areas such as human rights, labour and the environment.

Kwieciński said: "After a time when we were confined to the very narrow circle of the so-called Soviet bloc, we regained our independence and are building our economic strength.”

He added that membership in the group would help "boost Poland’s position" on the international arena, but above all help Polish companies.

Kingo said that the signing of the agreement at the headquarters of Poland's Permanent Mission to the UN in New York was a significant event as Poland became the first governmental member of the initiative in Eastern Europe.

She added that the UNGC wants to mobilise companies in all regions of the world.

To make sustainable development a reality by 2030, she said, the UNGC needs to mobilise companies from all sectors to contribute to further successes in innovation and create environmentally safe products, among other steps.

The UNGC Government Group includes China, Spain, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and others.
