He was speaking on the sidelines of a NATO meeting in Brussels on Wednesday.
Macron made controversial comments earlier this month about the military alliance’s “brain death” and claimed that NATO lacked coordination and suffered from US unpredictability under President Donald Trump.
His words have sparked outrage among NATO diplomats, with one reportedly calling the interview stupid and arrogant.
Asked whether Macron’s critique had been discussed at the Brussels meeting, Poland’s Czaputowicz said that there were calls for a display of the alliance’s unity “in the face of the threat posed by Russia,” and that the French president’s words were noticed and criticised.
Czaputowicz also said that maintaining NATO unity was key for the security of both European countries and NATO member states on the eastern flank of the alliance.
Czaputowicz added that the Brussels meeting focused on preparations for a gathering of NATO heads of state and government scheduled to take place on December 3-4 in London.
