A new team of European Commissioners headed by Germany’s Ursula von der Leyen was elected into office on Wednesday after winning approval from European lawmakers.

A total of 461 MEPs supported the new commissioners at a meeting of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, while 157 opposed the line-up, and 89 abstained.

The new commissioners are due to take up their posts on December 1.

Wednesday’s vote came after Wojciechowski was last month approved for the post by the European Parliament’s agricultural committee, which was gauging whether he was an appropriate candidate for the key role in the EU’s executive.

Von der Leyen in September named Wojciechowski as her pick for the EU’s next agriculture commissioner. She made the announcement after Poland earlier officially proposed the former MEP as its candidate for the European Union job.

Polish government spokesman Piotr Mueller told reporters in August that Wojciechowski would make a good agriculture commissioner because of his many years of experience as a Euro MP and a member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture.

Wojciechowski is a lawyer by education. He was a Eurodeputy from 2004 to 2016, when he left the European Parliament to become a member of the European Court of Auditors.

In the past he headed Poland’s Supreme Audit Office (NIK) and was a member of the national parliament, serving as a deputy lower-house Speaker.
