Speaking to public broadcaster Polish Radio on Monday, Rau said that such support was line with Poland’s national interests as a country on the eastern edges of NATO.
"The democratization of Belarus guarantees long-term political stabilization and harmonious development in that country,” he said.
Rau told Polish Radio that Poland must look at tensions across its eastern border “from the perspective of the eastern flank of NATO.”
"The last thing we need in this part of Europe is an increased military presence in Belarus," he said.
He elaborated that such a scenario was being made more likely by the weakening position of Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko vis-à-vis Russia.
Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei on Saturday accused Western countries of attempting to sow “chaos and anarchy” in the former Soviet republic, which has been rocked by street protests since an election last month, the Reuters news agency reported.
Poland’s President Andrzej Duda last week urged support for Belarus in a major address to the United Nations.
The presidents of Poland, Lithuania and Romania last Monday voiced support for the people of Belarus in building democracy and civil society institutions while also urging international assistance for the country.
