Polish state news agency PAP cited Borrell as saying that President Alexander Lukashenko's regime was continuing to intimidate its own citizens, and had now taken aim at the Polish community in Belarus.

Borrell told reporters on Monday that he hoped a new raft of EU sanctions would be adopted in the coming weeks, PAP reported.

The European Commission in March called on the Belarusian authorities to free and drop all charges against several detained leaders of the Polish ethnic minority in that country.

The EU executive said the detained members of the Association of Poles in Belarus, including Andżelika Borys and Andrzej Poczobut, should be released immediately and unconditionally.
