Ukrainian broadcaster Hromadske Radio reported on its website that cybercriminals were also zeroing in on think tanks, international development consultants and NGOs.

The website quoted Tom Bert, vice president for customer security at IT giant Microsoft, as saying that the latest wave of cyberattacks by “threat actor Nobelium” originating from Russia sought to compromise around 3,000 email accounts at more than 150 different organizations.

“This week we observed cyberattacks by the threat actor Nobelium targeting government agencies, think tanks, consultants, and non-governmental organizations,” Bert said in a blog post.

He added: “This wave of attacks targeted approximately 3,000 email accounts at more than 150 different organizations. While organizations in the United States received the largest share of attacks, targeted victims span at least 24 countries.”

Bert also said that at least a quarter of the targeted organizations were involved in international development, humanitarian, and human rights work.
