Some Western leaders are beginning to fear that a Russian defeat in Ukraine could create new problems in Europe and are quietly pushing for a “face-saving” resolution to Moscow's war, even if that could cost Ukraine some territory, according to a report.

Ukraine’s fierce defence against invading Russian forces and a string of recent military successes have prompted leaders in countries such as France, Germany and Italy to conclude that a once-unthinkable Ukrainian victory is now a distinct possibility, the Politico news service has reported.

While most European leaders sympathize publicly with Ukraine’s struggle, some appear to be worried that a win for Kyiv could destabilize Russia, making it even more unpredictable and harming energy security, according to the politico.com website.

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi have all recently called for a prompt ceasefire in Ukraine, Politico reported.
