Polish, American presidents hold phone call on Ukraine

Poland’s president has held a phone conversation with his US counterpart about the situation in war-hit Ukraine and the upcoming NATO summit, among other topics.

Andrzej Duda spoke to Joe Biden on Wednesday afternoon, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The Polish president’s office said in a tweet that the Polish and American heads of state “discussed the upcoming summits of the Bucharest Nine and NATO, as well as the situation in Ukraine.”

Other topics included ways to strengthen Poland’s security, officials said.

On Wednesday evening, Duda travels to Portugal, which is the first stop on his three-day visit to southern Europe.

During the trip, which also takes in Italy and Romania, the president will lobby European Union partners to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate to join the bloc, officials told reporters.

Wednesday is day 105 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
