Zbigniew Rau and Wang Yi held the video conversation as part of a session of the Polish-Chinese Intergovernmental Committee, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Bilateral issues

Poland’s top diplomat said that Warsaw placed huge importance on bilateral cooperation with Beijing, especially on attracting greenfield investments from China, officials said.

Rau noted that Poland had a growing trade deficit with China, describing this as "the main problem in bilateral relations."

Russia’s aggression against Ukraine

With reference to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, both the Polish and Chinese foreign ministers agreed that “relations between countries must be based on respect for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity,” officials told reporters.

This was agreed despite Poland and China voting differently on the Ukraine war at the United Nations, reporters were told.

“Warsaw calls on all the nations that respect the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity to condemn in the strongest terms the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Poland’s foreign ministry said in a statement after Friday's video call.

Rau and Wang Yi expressed their countries’ readiness to deepen Polish-Chinese dialogue, as regards both the international situation and bilateral cooperation, officials said.

Friday is day 107 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
