Poland was the largest producer of hard coal in 2018, followed by the Czech Republic (4.5 mln tonnes) and Germany (2.8 mln tonnes).

Eurostat said that the use of hard coal in the European Union has been decreasing since 1990, with consumption last year at 54% of the 497 million tonnes used in 1990.

The production of hard coal has also been falling year on year, the agency reported. “In 2018, production stood at 74 million tonnes, 6% less than in 2017,” the agency said.

Only five EU countries produced hard coal in 2018, down from 14 members of the bloc in 1990, according to Eurostat.
