Over seven in 10 Polish pensioners now use bank accounts, while the figure 14 years ago was around four in 10, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

It added that women set up bank accounts more often than men.

Wojciech Andrusiewicz, a spokesman for Poland’s Social Insurance Institution (ZUS), said that having a bank account is important because it is less risky for pensioners than keeping money at home.

He added that access to the banking system helps prevent elderly people from being financially excluded.
