Over a million tourists have visited the Polish Tatra mountains in August alone, a regional tourist organization has said.

Meanwhile, the number of visitors to the historic salt mine in Wieliczka near Kraków reached nearly 170,000 over the same month, according to the Małopolska Tourist Organization (MOT).

Also in August, some 109,00 people went on an iconic rafting tour down the Dunajec river in a traditional wooden boat, a fifty-percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The numbers indicate a modest recovery in the Polish tourist sector, one of the industries hit the hardest as a result of lockdowns and restrictions introduced amid the global coronavirus pandemic, the Polish News Agency PAP reported.

Despite the rebound this summer, the sector remains fearful of the winter season and the possibility for more restrictions in the upcoming months, the President of MOT Grzegorz Biedroń told PAP.
