Italian police swooped in on the 32-year-old when he was spotted in a street a few kilometres from the jail, PAP reported.

The man, whose name has been withheld under privacy laws, broke out of the Poggioreale prison in the Italian city of Napoli on Sunday in the first escape from the prison in 100 years.

The jail is notorious for its tough conditions and for being one of Europe’s most overcrowded penitentiaries, PAP reported.

He fled using a rope made from a bedsheet and climbed over the wall of the prison, where he was being held on murder charges.

The man had been in prison since December 2018, after he was accused of murdering a Ukrainian citizen.
