Most of the accidents were caused by excessive speed.

Radosław Kobryś from the traffic department of Poland’s police headquarters said on Wednesday: "The numbers are not a cause for satisfaction, but when you consider that the death toll is several hundred less than a year ago, and several hundred fewer people were injured than a year ago, and a lot less people killed, then the picture looks completely different."

Meanwhile, 203 people drowned during the summer vacation period, which saw Poles taking to the water to cool off amid a heatwave.

Mariusz Ciarka, a spokesman for Poland’s chief of police, said the death toll from drowning was down by 15 on last summer, even though the holidays were longer than in 2018.

“But it’s still 203 people too many," he added.

The new school year began in Poland on Monday.
