“On Monday … before midnight, masked Polish border guards armed with machine guns boarded the Rainbow Warrior as it was holding a peaceful protest,” the environmental group said in a statement on Tuesday.

The protest “was set to point out to the Polish government the urgent need for action towards climate protection and the necessity to abandon burning coal by 2030,” the statement added.

Environmental activists painted the slogan "Stop Coal" in Polish on the side of the coal ship.

Tadeusz Gruchalla, a spokesman for Poland’s Border Guard, said that Greenpeace activists had successfully blocked the coal ship from entering the port using three pontoon boats.

The detained environmentalists may have to face charges for breaching navigation safety regulations, PAP reported.
