The awards, presented by the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) on Wednesday, went to Marcin Drąg, Andrzej Kossakowski and Andrzej Wiśniewski in recognition of their outstanding achievements and scientific discoveries.

Each of the three winners received prize money of PLN 200,000 (EUR 47,000, USD 52,000), Poland's PAP news agency reported.

During the awards ceremony at Warsaw’s Royal Castle, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Science and Higher Education Minister Jarosław Gowin said the three professors were leading lights of the country’s research and academic communities and mentors for many colleagues and students.

The annual Foundation for Polish Science Awards, now in their 28th year, are handed out in four areas: chemical and material sciences; mathematical and physical sciences; humanities and social sciences; and life and earth sciences.

This year no award was given in this last category, the PAP news agency reported.
