The organisation and its diocesan branches are collecting food products in supermarkets, retail chains and local shops across Poland for the 17th time.

This year, 20,000 volunteers are taking part in the action taking place over Friday and Saturday.

Customers are asked to donate non-perishables and easy-to-store foods, which will later be used to prepare Christmas dishes for the needy or donated to disadvantaged families.

Bartłomiej Kulisz, coordinator of Caritas Poland’s food aid programs, said: "It can be rice, pasta, flour, but also various kinds of sweets.”

He added: “Children are also among those in need who will willingly accept such gifts.”
