The Warsaw neighbourhood, nestled along the western bank of the Vistula River, is listed as No. 6 on what the newspaper describes as its “pick of less-touristy districts” that deserve to be explored to “really get under the skin of Europe’s great cities.”

The Guardian promotes Warsaw’s Powiśle as a place that “thanks to Poland’s economic boom resembles a carnival every summer …”

“Time to abandon preconceptions that Warsaw is grey and cold because in the best part of the year it really is green and hot,” the newspaper said.

“Pubs and riverboats offer craft beers and cocktails, with street food ranging from pierogi dumplings to pho soup (Warsaw has a big Vietnamese community).

“Powiśle was on the frontline in the Warsaw uprising against Nazi Germany and wears its shrapnel scars with pride. It’s fitting that the district is now all about ... cycling, roller-blading, volleyball, trampolining, picnics ... deckchairs, ice-cream, live music, dancing and playing in the sand ...”

The British daily lists the Warsaw University Library, the Copernicus Science Centre and the Elektrownia shopping mall (“a former power station … with high-end shops and restaurants – worth a visit for the early 20th-century industrial architecture”) among places of special interest.

It also says that “Warsaw is one of the world’s top vegan-friendly cities, and Powiśle’s established contribution is Veg Deli … with pumpkin burgers and spinach and 'feta' ravioli.”

Other must-sees on the Guardian list are in Gothenburg, Brussels, Valencia, Porto, Berlin, Prague, Rome, Belgrade and Paris.
