The authorities added there was 79 new confirmed coronavirus cases on that day, bringing the country's total to 1,717.

The latest victim of the coronavirus was suffering from other medical problems, the authorities said.

On Saturday, 249 new infections were confirmed by the health ministry in Warsaw, with 152 on Tuesday, 151 on Wednesday, 170 on Thursday, and 168 on Friday.

The first infection was confirmed by Polish authorities on March 4, while the country's first coronavirus fatality was announced on March 12.

Poland has declared a “state of epidemic". It shut its borders to non-residents on March 15 for 10 days, and on Wednesday announced the restrictions were being extended until April 13.

International scheduled flights and passenger rail connections have been suspended. The government is chartering special flights to help citizens abroad return home.

Poles have been told they cannot gather in groups of more than two, though families are exempt from the restriction.
