The limited-edition PLN 20 note, which enters circulation on Tuesday, features an image of Marshal Józef Piłsudski, a statesman and military leader who is seen as a key figure in Poland recovering its sovereignty a century ago.

The 1920 Battle of Warsaw was fought from August 12 to 25 in 1920 as Red Army forces commanded by Mikhail Tukhachevsky approached the Polish capital. Polish forces led by Piłsudski counterattacked, forcing the Soviets to withdraw.

The battle, often described as the “Miracle of the Vistula,” has been listed among the most important battles that have decided the fate of the world.

A total of 60,000 of the new banknotes have been issued. Despite being PLN 20 notes, they cost PLN 80 (EUR 18, USD 21) each to buy.
