Police across the country on Friday tracked cars along several points on a given stretch of road to check if their average speed exceeded the permissible limit.

Officers ordered 232 drivers to hand over their licences for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 kph in built-up areas, traffic police spokesman Robert Opas told state news agency PAP on Tuesday.

He added that almost 1,000 drink-drivers were detained over the weekend.

Poland’s prime minister said last year his government would launch a major drive to improve road safety.

In recent years Poland has been close to the bottom of a European Union ranking on road safety.

Tuesday is World Car Free Day, which is marked on September 22 and encourages motorists to give up their cars for a day.
