Using phone when crossing street to be banned in Poland

Poles will be forbidden from using cell phones while crossing the street under rules aiming to improve safety adopted by the government.

Officials also want to prevent drivers tailgating one another, a common sight on Polish roads.

On motorways and dual carriageways, motorists will have to keep a distance from the vehicle in front that is half their speed.

That means a driver travelling at 100 kilometres per hour will have to keep a distance of 50 metres from the car ahead, unless overtaking.

Meanwhile, the government has decided to cut the speed limit in built-up areas to 50 kmh at night.

Under current rules, the limit in such areas is 60 kmh between 11pm and 5am, and 50 kmh at other times.
