The initiative, which covers 2021 to 2023, is the first of its kind in Poland. It aims to make it easier for sufferers to be diagnosed and to improve coordination of treatment.

Tens of millions of zlotys are to be spent on the plan this year, state news agency PAP reported.

Sunday was world Rare Disease Day, an event designed to raise awareness of unusual ailments and improve access to medical care.

Rare diseases are defined as those that affect no more than five people in every 10,000.

The Polish government last month adopted a long-term strategy to improve quality of life for disabled people.

Earlier in February, officials announced plans to set up a network to improve treatment of Polish patients with heart problems, and a chain of centres for people with cancer.
