The pilot programme will cover between 5,000 and 31,000 Polish citizens inhabiting underdeveloped areas in the northeast of the country.

Regardless of their economic and professional status, all participants will be paid PLN 1,300 (EUR 280, USD 300) every month for two years, the website reported.

The Warmia and Masuria region is close to Poland's border with Russia’s Kaliningrad enclave and has suffered heavy economic woes.

Maciej Szlinder, an economist involved in the study, said that many areas in the region have seen high rates of joblessness, low average income, and a population decline in the wake of Poland’s economic and political transition after the fall of communism in 1989.

The experiment aims to examine how universal basic income affects people’s professional, educational, and social activities, as well as their well-being and relationships.

Similar pilot programmes have been carried out in Finland, Germany and India, producing some promising results, according to Bankier.pl.
