The three-time world champion and winner of the 2015 Dakar rally finished ahead of last year’s victor, Russia’s Alexander Maximov.
Sonik was one-and-a-half hours ahead of his Russian rival when he reached the finish line in Dunhuang, China. He took the lead in the World Cup classification.
Only three riders took part in the quads event. Two finished the race. Poland's Aleksander Lindner had an accident in the penultimate stage and withdrew from the competition.
Silk Way is considered one of the most difficult off-road rallies in the world. This year’s route, spanning Russia, Mongolia and China, totalled 5,000 km, half of which were special stages.
Qatar’s Nasser Al-Attiyah, the winner of the last Dakar Rally, triumphed in the car category.
