Poland beat Venezuela in strong start to Basketball World Cup

Poland have beaten Venezuela 80-69 in their opening match of the Basketball World Cup in Beijing, chalking up their first win in the tournament in 52 years.

Poland’s American coach, Mike Taylor, said: “We have demonstrated in the last few years that our players can rise to the occasion.”

Taylor, as cited by the eurohoops.net website, added: “The key was how we reacted to the ball pressure and of course the rebounds and teamwork. It’s a great start to the tournament for us.”

On Monday, Poland take on hosts China in a group A match. Two days later they face off against the Ivory Coast.
