He was the first Pole to circumnavigate the globe single-handedly without calling at a port.

Having set off from the Polish port of Gdynia on the Baltic coast on June 12, 1979, he covered 31,729 nautical miles, sailing around the Cape of Good Hope, the south coast of Australia and New Zealand, around South America and Cape Horn.

Jaskuła returned to Gdynia on October 18, 1980, making what was the longest solo round-the-world voyage at the time.

He sailed on the Dar Przemyśla, a yacht with a sail area of 80 square metres.

Jaskuła was the third man in the world to achieve such a feat, after British sailor Robin Knox-Johnson and Scottish yachtsman Chay Blyth.

In 1984, Jaskuła published an account of his solo exploit in a best-selling book.

His awards included the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Reborn Poland and honorary citizenship of his hometown of Przemyśl, where he lived for several decades.

He was also an honorary member of the Joseph Conrad Yacht Club in the US city of Chicago.
