Kalaber succeeds Tomasz Valtonen, a Polish-born Finnish former professional hockey forward, whose two-year contract as Poland coach has expired and has not been extended, officials said on Tuesday.

In February, the Polish team won an Olympic qualifying tournament in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan after beating the hosts, the Netherlands and Ukraine.

In August next year, the Poles are expected to play Slovakia, Austria and Belarus in the Slovak capital Bratislava for a berth in the winter Olympics.

But before that Poland will face off against Estonia, Lithuania, Serbia, Japan and Ukraine in next year’s Division 1B World Championships.

That tournament will be held in Katowice, southern Poland, from April 26 to May 2, 2021.
