Football: Poland’s Lewandowski scores in Bundesliga opener

Polish star striker Robert Lewandowski scored from the penalty spot as his Bayern Munich side kicked off the new Bundesliga season with a record 8-0 win over Schalke.

The goal from Lewandowski came in the 31st minute of the match in Munich after Bayern were awarded the penalty following a foul on the Poland international.

The Pole also earned two assists as the German premier league opened its 2020/2021 season on Friday.

Lewandowski ended the previous season as the division’s top scorer, on 34 goals.

In addition to notching up a strong Bundesliga season, the Polish goal machine scored six times for Bayern in the German Cup.

He also bagged 15 goals in last season’s Champions League, where his Bayern beat French side Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the competition’s final at the end of last month.

Lewandowski has also been prolific for the Polish national team, of which he is captain and which is scheduled to play Italy and Bosnia-and-Herzegovina in the Nations League next month.
