Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski has ended up with the silver in the 1500m at the European Athletics Indoor Championships after a series of twists saw a rival finishing first, then being disqualified, only to be reinstated as winner.

Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen was disqualified for putting his foot outside the track when he lost his balance on the first bend in Friday’s final.

Second-placed Lewandowski, who was 0.5 seconds behind at the finish line, was awarded the gold. He only had two hours to savour his victory on home turf in the north-central Polish city of Toruń.

The Norwegian team lodged a protest which was upheld by the judges, and Ingebrigtsen had his gold restored.

In the shot put, Poland’s Michał Haratyk finished runner-up with a best effort of 21.47m. Czech Tomáš Staněk bested him by 15cm to take the gold.

The 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships kicked off in the north-central Polish city of Toruń on Thursday evening. They run until Sunday.

Poland topped the medals table at the last two European indoor championships and are looking to follow suit for a third time at the Toruń Arena venue.
