The 24-year-old Pole on Tuesday defeated Italian qualifier Thomas Fabbiano, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in their first-round men’s singles match at the clay-court tournament in the south of France.
The Polish player, who is world No. 16, will now take on Daniel Evans of Britain in the next round of the men's singles.
Hurkacz has also reached the second round of the men’s doubles at the tournament, partnering with Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Up next for the Polish-Canadian pairing are top-seeded Colombians Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah.
The Pole, who is coached by American Craig Boynton, earlier this month won the men's singles at the Miami Open, a major US tournament sometimes referred to as "the fifth Grand Slam."
Hurkacz took down 19-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner 7-6, 6-4 in the final in Florida to claim his third ATP singles title and become Poland's first ATP Masters 1000 singles champion.
In January, Hurkacz won his second ATP singles title by beating American Sebastian Korda in the final of the Delray Beach Open tournament in the United States.
