"Russia has been stripped of yet another international sports event as a result of its aggression against Ukraine,” Poland’s Sports Minister Kamil Bortniczuk told reporters last week.

“This demonstrates that hard-hitting sanctions in the field of sport … are effective, and that it does make sense to put pressure on sports governing bodies,” he said.

Poland's southern city of Kraków will replace Russia’s Moscow as the venue in response to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, reporters were told.

Poland to host volleyball, shooting, rugby events instead of Russia

Poland has previously been selected to co-host this year's volleyball world championships with Slovenia, and it will also host the 2022 European shooting championships instead of Russia following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in late February, Bortniczuk said.

The European finals in rugby sevens, an Olympic sport with seven players on each side, are due to be held at Kraków’s Reyman Stadium from July 1 to 3.

At the previous event last year, Poland’s women’s team finished second, only behind Russia, which has been banned from the 2022 championships.

The men’s team, meanwhile, will be looking to improve on its eighth-place showing in 2021.
