Playing in front of their home crowd, Wales started off well, but had no clear chances to score despite the Polish defence’s helplessness.

From the 25th minute, Poles began to offer some resistance, when Jakub Kiwior tried to plant a header after Piotr Zieliński’s cross.

Several minutes later, Wales responded, but two shots were saved by the Polish goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczęsny.

Goalless at half-time, the match gained its momentum after the break when Poland took control over the ball.

In the 57th minute, Poland’s dominance produced a goal – Kiwior crossed the ball to Robert Lewandowski, who superbly chipped it past the defenders to Karol Świderski and the Charlotte FC striker managed to find the net through the goalkeepers’ legs.

After the goal, the match turned ugly, as chances ran scarce and fouls grew abundant.

Late in the second half, the Welshmen bucked up and showed great determination to convert one of their opportunities, but Szczęsny was unbeatable on the day.

In the final minutes of the game, Poland’s frantic defending could have favoured Wales, but the Polish goalkeeper was in sick shape.

He was preventing the Welsh team from putting the ball in the net, once getting help from the woodwork when Gareth Bale battered a header on to the crossbar in injury time.

The win over Wales has allowed Poland to secure its place in the Nations League top division, consigning their opponents to relegation.

Poland will next take on Mexico in their first group stage match at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on 22 November.
