Established in 2000, the Laureus awards are granted annually for outstanding individual and team achievements in the previous calendar year, Poland's PAP news agency reported.
Lewandowski was nominated in the main category of “world sportsman,” alongside American football star Tom Brady, US swimmer Caeleb Dressel, Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, Kenyan marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge, and Formula One world champion Max Verstappen of the Netherlands.
The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Monaco in April.
Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal was named Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for 2020.
Lewandowski recently won FIFA’s Best Men’s Player award for the second year running, in recognition of his goal-scoring feats for Bayern Munich and the Polish national team.
