The concert, featuring Mahler’s Third Symphony, is a tribute to the famous conductor in what is one of his last appearances as Music Director of the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, a month before he retires from the post.
This year’s Wratislavia Cantans, as its director Giovani Antonini writes on the event’s website, ‘turns to the South, looks at the inspirations constantly coming from there, observes the cross-over of traditions, and looks for sources of our contemporary culture in this region”.

Featured ensembles which are set to perform in Wrocław include the Coptic Orthodox Church Choir, the Greek Byzantine Choir and Giovani Antonini’s Il Giardino Armonico.

The festival ends on September 15 with a concert performance of George Gershwin’s opera ‘Porgy and Bess’ performed by members of the Hertfordshire Chorus from the UK, with soloists Indira Mahajan, Angela Renee Simpson, Ronald Samm and Kevin Short, conducted by Wayne Marshall.

Wratislavia Cantans is one of the oldest music festivals in Poland. Founded in 1966, it is held for the 54th time. (mk)
