Jasiński, 83, started an international concert career after winning the Maria Canals Piano Competition in Barcelona in 1960.

Foreign tours have since taken him to countries around Europe as well as Brazil, Japan and Uruguay.

He has been on the faculty of the Music Academy in Katowice for over five decades.

After his student Krystian Zimerman won the 1975 Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw, Jasiński became one of the world’s most sought-after piano teachers.

He has been invited to give masterclasses and sit on the juries of music competitions across the world.

In his thank-you remarks during the ceremony at Katowice City Hall, Jasiński spoke of his pride to be a resident of the city.

“In all my trips around the world, whenever I say I come from Katowice, where I am a professor at the Music Academy, I hear words of appreciation for the city, which takes care of culture, music and the arts,” he said.

Past recipients of the honorary citizenship of Katowice include Pope John Paul II, composers Wojciech Kilar and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, film director Kazimierz Kutz, and the former president of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek.
