The decision by the Polish Film Institute (PISF) was announced on Friday.

Corpus Christi, which premiered at this year's Venice Film Festival, presents the story of a 20-year-old who wants to become a priest, but struggles because of his criminal record. He is then sent to work at a carpenter's shop in a small town, where he dresses up as a priest and starts preaching at a local parish.

The movie, which features Polish actor Bartosz Bielenia in the main role, was highly rated by Italian critics after it was screened as part of the festival’s Giornate degli Autori, or Venice Days, section last week, the PAP news agency reported.

Corpus Christi will this month be vying for top honours at the 44th Polish Film Festival in the Baltic city of Gdynia.

The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will hand out the Oscar awards on February 9.
